Authorized on May 11, 1942, the Air Medal is awarded for single acts of achievement after September 8, 1939 to any member of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguishes him/herself by heroism, outstanding achievement or by meritorious service while participating in aerial flight.

Air Medal Miniature (Marine Corps)
The front of the medal depicts a human right hand with open palm within a raised circle. At the top of the medal’s reverse is the raised inscription, “FOR HUMANITARIAN SERVICE” set in three lines. In the center is an oak branch with three acorns and leaves and, below this, is the raised circular inscription, “UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES” around the lower edge of the medal
