The Miniature Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait is awarded to servicemembers who served in support of Operation Desert Shield or Desert Storm  between August 2, 1990  and August 1, 1993. Personnell must have served in Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates, Oman or Bahrain or on the gulf and surrounding waterways to receive the Liberatin of Kuwait Medal.

The Government of Kuwait offered the Kuwait Liberation Medal to members of the Armed Forces of the United States by letter dated 16 July 1994. The medal was accepted bySecretary of Defense William J. Perry per memorandum dated 16 March 1995.

The Kuwait version of the Kuwait Liberation Medal is considered junior in precedence to the Saudi Arabian version of the medal.
