The Transportation 9-11 Medal is awarded to employees of the Department of Transportation and private citizens for meritorious service resulting from unusual and outstanding achievement in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001. The award may be made posthumously.

Transportation 9-11 Medal
The front of the medal is dominated by a lighted candle from which 11 beams of light emanate with nine stars located between the beams. Below the candle are two olive branches representing peace and the Latin inscription, “NE OBLIVISCARIS” (Never Forget). Around the periphery of the medal are the inscriptions, “DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION” at the top and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” at the bottom. The medal’s reverse contains the inscription, “FOR SERVICE AND SACRIFICE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DURING AND AFTER THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.”
